Ethical Issues in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. McKinney, K. Discusses three ethical standards or criteria that apply when considering research that involves humans (informed consent, right to privacy and protection from harm) in the context of scholarship on teaching and learning.

From Minsk to Pinsk: Why a Scholarship Of Teaching and Learning?. Shulman, L. Suggests three broad rationales for investing in the scholarship of teaching and learning: (1) Professionalism (the inherent obligations associated with becoming a scholar); (2) Pragmatism (the activities needed to meets responsibilities to students); and (3) Policy (the capacity to respond to regulators and the marketplace demands). Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education. . SDRME is dedicated to enhancing the quality of education in medical schools. It is composed of directors of units with responsibility for educational research, evaluation, and program development. The Society is an advocate for education research and development in medicine and seeks to influence national research policy.

Taking Learning Seriously. Shulman, L.S.. Addresses the issue of "taking learning seriously?" by reflecting on four key questions: What does it mean to take anything seriously? What do we mean by learning? What does learning look like when it's not going well? How do we take active responsibility for both addressing learning problems and enhancing successful strategies? Offers two simple propositions (Don't Reinvent the Wheel and Make Teaching Public) and and one caution (Good Teaching Scholarship is Hard) about how to proceed with the scholarship of teaching. Emphasis is on the discipline of history, but propositions are applicable to all academics.
