An Introduction to Classroom Assessment Techniques. Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence. Provides an overview of classroom assessment techniques and general recommendations for their use. Briefly describes and provides examples of the Background Knowledge Probe, Misconception/Preconception Check, Minute Paper, Documented Problems, and Categorizing Grid assessment methods.

Assessing Student Learning. The University of New England (Australia) - Teaching and Learning Centre. A 17-page booklet addressing key issues relating to student assessment. Covers the purposes of assessment, student concerns regarding examinations and assignments, changing conceptions of assessment, the importance of feedback and the problems involved in the interpretation of assessment results. Includes a checklist which instructors can use when reviewing their assessment practices.

Assessment that Promotes Learning. Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence. Suggests ways to use students' concern about tests and grades to help assess and improve how they learn, how they think, and how they come to value certain ways of learning and thinking and knowing. Discusses assessment strategies such as a Syllabus and Day 1 Questionnaire; a Self-Analysis of Exam Performance; Bringing a Daily Problem to the Lecture; and the Lab Writeup.

Classroom Assessment. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga - Teaching Resource Center. Discusses seven assumptions underlying application of classroom assessment techniques. Describes dozens of techniques for assessing (a) course-related knowledge and skills; (b) learner attitudes, values, and self-awareness; and (c) learner reactions to teachers and teaching.

Classroom Assessment Techniques. National Teaching and Learning Forum. Answers the following key questions about classroom assessment: What is classroom assessment? How is classroom assessment different? How do I use Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs)? Why should I use CATs? Provides brief descriptions of selected CATs, including what to do with the data and the prep, in-class and analysis time required for each.

Classroom Assessment Techniques. Angelo, TA & Cross, KP. A short excerpt from Classroom Assessment Techniques, A Handbook for College Teachers by Thomas A. Angelo and K. Patricia Cross. Describes the ideal characteristics of classroom assessment and its basic assumptions. Outlines a simple 3-step approach to getting started with applying classroom assessment strategies and provides some basic suggestions to help ensure success.

Classroom Assessment Techniques in Asynchronous Learning Networks. Henderson, T. Describe the adaptation of a specific type of classroom assessment techniques (CATs) to a distance learning course at Washington State University and provides a brief overview of CATs with possible issues to consider for future application in online learning. Course-Based Review and Assessment. University of Massachusetts - Amherst. A handbook designed to guide faculty through the steps of student learning assessment at the course level. Topics include: Adapting Your Course to Include Assessment, Selecting When and How Often to Assess, Assessing Student Learning Over the Course of the Semester, and Interpreting and Using the Results of Classroom Assessment. Includes Samples, Examples and Worksheets and a Bibliography.

Strategies for Assessing Learning Effectiveness. Steinkuehler, CA & Derry, SJ. Provides a set of exemplary strategies for assessing the effectiveness of different pedagogies and/or technologies based on current 'best practices' within the field of educational research. Each strategy is outlined in terms of its purpose and general requirements, its limitations, common variations on it, and additional resources for further inquiry. For each strategy, a list of example research studies is provided; these studies illustrates how the strategy was implemented and, when possible, what specific measures were used.

Student Assessment. Illinois State University. A comprehensive set of Web resources on assessment. Includes links to general background information/associations, assessment guides, assessment at other universities and the regional accrediting agencies.
