A Method for Grading Essays in Any Course. University of Virginia - Teaching Concerns. Recommends a simple three category checklist (ideas/argument/mechanics and style) useful in grading essays in any course. Gives examples of how to translate checklist results into traditional letter grades. Also describes the value and use of end comments.

Grading. Florida State University. Chapter 13 in Instruction at FSU: A Guide to Teaching & Learning Practices. Differentiates among various philosophies and purposes served by grades and compares norm and criterion-referenced grading strategies. Applies standard concepts of psychometrics (validity, reliability, etc) to grading processes and briefly discusses performance evaluation. Also covers fairness in grading and privacy rights and obligations related to grading.

Grading Class Participation. University of Virginia - Teaching Concerns. Answers the following key questions about class participation: Why do I want students to participate in class discussions? What class participation behaviors contribute to others' learning? How can participation be graded? Includes a 5-point criterion-based scale for assessing class participation.

Grading Practices. Davis. BG. From Tools for Teaching by Barbara Gross Davis; Jossey-Bass Publishers: San Francisco, 1993. Topics include: General Strategies; Minimizing Students' Complaints About Grading; Making Effective Use of Grading Tactics; and Evaluating Your Grading Policies.

Grading students. Cross, Lawrence H. Discusses several aspects of assigning grades. First, an issue that underlies for both approaches, variability of test scores, is discussed. The use of standardized scores is presented as a solution to the variability problem, ideas on assigning letter grades, and recommendations are then presented.

Grading Students' Classroom Writing: Issues and Strategies. ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education. Discusses the relation of the writing process to the grading process, ways to construct effective writing assignments, theoretical issues in grading related to fairness and professional judgment, ways to include students in the assessment of writing, and guidelines professors can use to provide effective feedback for students to revise their writing.

Grading Systems. University of Minnesota - Center for Teaching and Learning. Differentiates between norm-referenced and criterion-referenced grading systems, describes potential modification of these systems for determining student grades, and discusses alternatives to these two approaches.

Guidelines for Evaluation. University of Northern British Columbia - Nursing Program. Provides general guidelines for the evaluation of clinical practice and a more specific 4-attribute scaling approach to letter grade determination for clinical coursework (i.e., A, B, C, D, F).

IDEA Papers - Improving College Grading (No. 19). Kansas State University. Based on a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of percentage (criterion) and class-curve (norm) grading, derives a set of guiding principles for grading systems. Recommends the use of anchor measures (using normative data from prior classes or multiple sections) as the best method for grading. Provides a list of references for further reading.
