These guidelines discuss the appropriate and inappropriate use of these newer forms of Web media. Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox December 1995

Interactive Multimedia Design Guidelines. Mallon, Adrian. Breaks the multimedia design process down into the following principal phases: planning, design, production and validation. Sub-tasks are described for each principle phase. Tasks are listed sequentially, in the order they would often be tackled in the actual development process.

Interactive Multimedia Development. University of Texas - Austin. Reviews information about learning theories, multimedia development processes, design principles, and software programs related to interactive multimedia design and production. Includes a searchable database containing information and URLs related to multimedia development and web design.

Interface Design for Educational Multimedia. Smith, R. A useful guide that describes the software development process, including the interface design phase. Major topics include Principles of Interface Design, the Aesthetics of Interface Design, Designing the Project, and Interaction Design. Includes a successful and unsuccessful example.

Multimedia Authoring Guidelines. University of Queensland. Takes a project management approach to multimedia development, organized in five phases: Initiation, Definition, Specification and design, Development, and Delivery. Parallel to these phases are the ongoing processes of project management, including testing and evaluation.
