Beating the Numbers Game. Felder, RM. Suggests ways to make large classes almost as effective as their smaller counterparts. Covers techniques to get students actively involved, helping them develop a sense of community, and how to give frequent assignments without killing yourself (or your teaching assistants) with impossible grading loads.

Clicking with Large Classes. Kelsey, K. A Q&A session with an assistant professor in Anthropology at the University of Oregon who teaches sections of 350 students. Covers key aspects of classroom management and methods to increase student motivation and participation.

Lecturing to Large Groups. The University of New England (Australia) - Teaching and Learning Centre. An 18-page booklet that makes the case for the use of formal lecture as a teaching mode. Provides examples of different ways of organizing a lecture and strategies for engaging and holding student interest. Includes hints on lecture preparation and dealing with difficult behaviour during the lecture.

Literature on the Improvement of Large Group Teaching: An Annotated Bibliography. Tiberius, R.G.. A comprehensive 8-page annotated bibliography on large group teaching in both medical and nonmedical settings, divided into section focusing on (a) rapport, relationship, and the first impression; (b) the organization of material for lecturing; (c) encouragement of interaction and participation; and (d) voice and drama and the techniques of the presentation.
